On March 5th, 2009 the American Heart Association released a new Heartsaver Bloodborne Pathogens course. As an instructor you need to become familiar with OSHA Standard 1910.1030 to teach this course. It is the responsibilty of the individual instructor to review all course materials before teaching. We have included the documents provided by AHA as downloads below, please review each document and purchase the needed materials before teaching this new course.

The Heartsaver Bloodborne Pathogens Course may be taught two different ways:

1) In a classroom setting taught by an instructor. Materials for the instructor and the students can be purchase from Training Concepts or an AHA distributor. To order from Training Concepts you can download an order form here.

2) As an eLearning course online followed by an instuctor reviewing site-specific information for the workplace location as required by OSHA. If the students choose to complete the first part of the course online they will need to do so at onlineaha.org. The online portion of the course costs $17.95. The instructor will then hold a shortened class to review site specific information and issue the student books and cards.

The site-specific information for the workplace location would include: information about where first aid kits and bio-hazard bags are located, procedures for disposing of contaminated items, paperwork needed for reporting incidents, etc.

Cards for the Bloodborne Pathogens course are included with the student book. It is required that every student receive a book for the class in order to receive a card. The Bloodborne Pathogens cards allow space for the student's name, instructor's name and issue date. These three fields may be hand written on the card by the instructor. The Bloodborne Pathogens card is the ONLY card that can include the month, day and year and have the date hand written.
