Dr. Marvin E. Skelton, practicing physician and former naval officer, could be best described as a humble, compassionate and charitable man who, through his quiet but steadfast leadership, helped our community. His charities branched to all levels of society from non-profit programs such as the Humane Society to individuals down on their luck. Importantly, he supported small programs such as ours, even though he had no other reason to befriend us.
Dr. Skelton passed away unexpectedly. His wife, Dr. Lana Skelton, continues to suppor the YWCA and our team to this day.
This award is given to the young person who best symbolizes leadership through such qualities as work ethic, attitude, persistence and the promotion of the programs, people, events and other services of the Water Dawg Swimming Program.
Previous recipients include Anthony Culpepper, Sara Laws, Meredith Ruka, Zach Rose, Caroline Jones, Julie Richards and Sarah Fell. The 2007 recipient of the Dr. Marvin E. Skelton Award is Emily Fell.
